New Paltz


The Shawangunks or the ‘Gunks’ is nestled just outside the village of New Paltz, New York, in the beautiful Hudson Valley. Located an hour and a half north of New York City, it is one of the nation’s premier rock climbing epicenters. The cliffs are located within the Historic Mohonk Preserve. Where in addition to rock climbing, you can also run, bike or hike along the miles of gently rolling carriage roads, and single track trails. When you’re not enjoying the incredible rock, just a short drive north, the Catskill Mountains region offers a wide range of summer and winter activities ice climbing, waterfall hikes, snowshoeing, cross country skiing. You can also find a wide variety of shops, antiques and dine in many of the fine restaurants in and around the towns of New Paltz, Gardiner, Stoneridge, High Falls, and Rosendale.

Transportation Alternatives
EMS does not provide transportation for any of our programs. Here are a few options for getting to our Climbing School in the Gunks.
Urban Sherpa: Scheduled van transportation directly to the Climbing School from NYC. Pick-up locations: Union Square (6:30am), Times Square (6:45am), Paramus EMS (7:30am). For reservations and trip dates go to UrbanSherpa.biz. YOU MUST REGISTER 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE!
Trailways Bus Service: Scheduled bus service from Port Authority (42nd St and 8 Ave) to New Paltz bus station. Take 7am bus from Port Authority to New Paltz. You will need to take a taxi from the bus station in New Paltz to the climbing school. Taxis will be waiting at bus station upon arrival. For rates and cost go to TrailwaysNY.com.

From the New York City area
Head north on the NY State Thruway to exit 18 "New Paltz". After the toll booth go left on rte. 299 West. Follow 299 West through the village about 8 miles until it ends at the intersection of rte.'s 44/55. At the stop sign go straight into the parking lot for Bistro Mountain Store and EMS.

From Up State New York
Follow NY State Thruway (I-87) South to exit 18 "New Paltz". After the toll booth go left on rte. 299 West. Follow 299 West through the village about 8 miles until it ends at the intersection of rte.'s 44/55. At the stop sign go straight into the parking lot for Bistro Mountain Store and EMS.

From the Boston area
Take the Mass Pike (I-90) to the NY State Thruway (I-87) South to exit 18 "New Paltz". After the toll booth go left on rte. 299 West. Follow 299 West through the village about 8 miles until it ends at the intersection of rte.'s 44/55. At the stop sign go straight into the parking lot for Bistro Mountain Store and EMS.
